CHENNAI: The city was on a sight-seeing spree on the occasion of Kaanum Pongal on Friday.

The Marina beach alone saw nearly 10 lakh visitors from afternoon till night, according to police sources.

Anna Square, Island Grounds, Vandalur Zoo and Gemini Circus in Periamet were the other places where people turned up in large numbers.

In order to prevent any untoward incident, the police put up barricades by the shore on the Marina.

At the Vandalur Zoo, 32 extra counters were operated to distribute tickets. Traffic personnel were posted at all zebra crossings to regulate the voluminous pedestrian traffic.

At Mudaliarkuppam Boat House, the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation posted extra officers to handle the festive rush.

As the number of visitors swelled, several children went missing at the beach and other tourist spots. Some were retraced.

At Marina, a police officer cautioned visitors on the public address system to be wary of pocket pickers. “Don’t let your children wander off while you are having fun,” the voice warned.
